DEDICATED FLEXIBLE CONDUIT SYSTEMS FOR THE PROTECTION OF VULNERABLE RAIL CABLING

Eisenbahn-Technologie ET2003, International Railway Exhibition,
Messe Basle, Switzerland December 3-5, 2003

Leading European flexible conduit manufacturer, Adaptaflex, exhibited a full range of metallic and non-metallic flexible conduit systems at ET2003, many of which are dedicated to meet stringent fire performance approvals, for railway rolling stock, trackside and underground areas.

Extensively used for the protection of electrical power, data, signalling, image and telecommunications cabling, Adaptaflex systems include the polyamide modified Type PR flexible conduit, which affords enhanced low fire hazard (ELFH) performance, with the versatility of the full range of Adaptalok UNEF fittings. Type PA offers low fire hazard (LFH) performance and Type PI, which is ultra flexible and suitable for use in very low temperatures and ‘under train' applications, are now available in heavyweight options. They can all be used with the same full range of Adaptalok fittings, including an all-brass thread range. All three systems recently underwent successful re-validation to DIN5510 for fireproof capability.

The highly versatile Adaptalok non-metallic conduit system, which offers fast, easy installation with push and twist fittings to afford IP66 ingress protection as standard, now benefits from a new, high visibility insert seal, which gives the system an IP68 rating, tested at 1.1 bar for 35 minutes.

Particularly important for underground and tunnel applications, Adaptaflex steel based, low fire hazard conduits, incorporate a flame retardant sheathing, offering low toxicity, low smoke density and halogen-free properties.

Working closely with rolling stock manufacturers on major rail and light rail projects throughout Europe, Australasia, Russia and the Middle East, Adaptaflex has a number of systems widely used on locomotives. These include low fire hazard LFH-SP Polyolefin covered steel system and the high-specification, non-metallic ‘PEEK' systems, which have all gained approval for Class 1 use.

The abrasion and abuse resistant stainless steel covered polyamide conduit system, Type PRSS and Type PRTC tinned copper braided, combine enhanced low fire hazard with a high EMI screen for railway applications. Such systems are used extensively on safety-critical applications and where abuse resistance is an issue, such as on CCTV installations at railway terminals and on strategic trackside applications.

Adaptaflex personnel were assisted throughout the exhibition by the company's Swiss representatives, Plica AG of Fraunfeld.
