Great recovery by Tommy Hill and the team despite a crash in the first race keeps Championship lead on course There was a remarkable comeback for Tommy Hill at Cadwell Park in the fourth round of the British Superbike Championship, May 21-23, after he spectacularly crashed out of the first race, but managed an incredible recovery in race 2 to take second place and retain overall leadership of the Championship.
Despite a good start Tommy, who is sponspored by Adaptaflex, on his Worx Crescent Suzuki was behind Ryuichi Kiyonari and working hard to maintain contact. Going through Hall Bends he caught the engine casing on the kerb and crashed out of the race. “I messed up with the crash, but I knew that Kiyo was going to get into a rhythm and if that happened he would be gone so I just pushed a little too hard and caught the engine casing on the kerb.”
But it was all praise from Tommy Hill for his team, “After the crash the lads worked so hard to make sure we would be back on the grid and I owed them big time so it was important we were back up there on the podium. To be honest we used this round as something of a test so we have some new ideas for Mallory Park.”
Cadwell Park circuit is nicknamed the mini Nürburgring and is where Tommy gained his first ever British Superbike win and became the youngest ever rider to do so. There was still some hard work to do in race two with a series of impressive passing manoeuvres by Tommy as he pushed on to improve his placing. This was most apparent at Barn just prior to the finishing straight where he went on to cross the line in second slot behind James Brookes who he now leads by 36 points in the Championship.
“A second place is more podium credits and points for the Championship so we still lead the standings thanks to a really great team effort,” added Tommy.
Before the race Tommy met up with Tony Marston and Dave White of Adaptaflex who were hosting a group of customers at the race day. Tommy gave them a personal briefing on the Worx Crescent Suzuki and a real close-up of just what goes on during race days. There was an insight to race tactics and an explanation of the technical differences the circuit demands on the rider and his machine.
Explained Dave White, “The buzz around race days is incredible with all the activity and preparations. It's a real eye-opener to see everything first hand that goes into keeping the team at the top of the Championship.”
The next round of the Championship is at Mallory Park on June 26, 27 and 28.
